General Information

PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

At present, the college and the teaching hospital are functioning from three main buildings. These are the Integrated Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS) block, the Teaching Hospital block and the OPD and Administrative block.
 

THE INTEGRATED BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES BLOCK

This block houses the various Basic Science departments and laboratories. The various labs housed in this block are the Histology lab, Biochemistry lab, Physiology lab, Community Medicine lab, Pathology lab, Microbiology lab and Pharmacology lab. It also houses the preclinical dental laboratories.

Each of these labs has a surface area of approximately 55 m2 and can accommodate 25 students. The dissection hall has a surface area of around 110 m2 and can accommodate over 100 students at a time. On the top floor there are two modern air conditioned lecture halls equipped with LCD projectors, OHPs, white board and cordless mike system which can each accommodate a total of 150 students.
 

THE TEACHING HOSPITAL BLOCK

The ground floor has the emergency wing, Gynecology & Obstetrics ward and radiology department and other diagnostic facilities e.g. endoscopy suite. The emergency is equipped with all modern facilities and has eight beds in the emergency ward and eleven beds for observation. The central sterile supplies department and the laundry are also on the ground floor.

The college teaching hospital has adequate number of beds in various departments according to the requirements of TU and NMC. The first floo houses the Medicine and orthopedic ward, clinical laboratories, various departments of dental college and inpatient pharmacy; the second floor has the haemodialysis unit, high dependency care unit, nephrology ward and the Dental OPD; the third floor has the Major Operation Theater, the surgical ward and Postoperative ward and the ICU, NICU and CCU. The top floor houses the Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and Otorhinolaryngology wards. The college auditorium with a seating capacity for 200 persons and is also situated in the top floor. To ensure easy access to stretcher trolleys and wheelchairs, a sloping ramp connects all the wards of the hospital. A lecture hall to seat 100 students has been constructed on the top floor. The ambassador of Pakistan to Nepal, His Excellency Arshed Saud Khosa inaugurated the new lecture hall and handed over a portable ultrasound machine and a pulmonary function test machine to the managing director, Er. Ashish Thapa. Diagnostic facilities like digital X-rays, ultrasound (color and black and white), obstetric ultrasound, dental X-rays, cytopathology services, histopathology services are at present available in the Teaching Hospital. Various hematological, biochemical and microbiological investigations are also available. Solid waste from the hospital is segregated at source into hazardous, sharp and general waste. The above waste is treated as per the norms laid down by the Government of Nepal and disposed.
 

THE OPD AND ACADEMIC BLOCK

The ground floor has the various out patient departments (OPDs) and also houses the patient waiting area. The third floor has the student classrooms. There are four classrooms – two small ones which can accommodate 50 students and two large ones which can accommodate over 100 students. The classrooms are equipped with modern audiovisual aids like overhead projector, LCD projector, slide projector, laptops and television monitors. This block also houses the administrative offices of the institution on the first floor and the outpatient hospital pharmacy on the ground floor.
 

NEW HOSPITAL BUILDING

The new hospital building is under construction adjacent to the existing hospital premises. Four floors will be ready for occupation shortly.
 

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD

The college offers comfortable twin sharing and four seater residential accommodations in the Integrated Basic Sciences (IBMS) block for around forty students. Preference is being given to students from outside the country and outside the Kathmandu valley, girls, the physically challenged, dalits and janajatis. The hostel fees for twin seater accommodation are Nepalese Rs. 6000 per student per month and for four seater accommodation it is Nepalese Rs. 3500 per student per month.

There are separate accommodation for boys and girls. Male students are strictly prohibited from going to the female students’ rooms and vice versa. The consumption of alcohol, and other intoxicating substances is strictly prohibited and if discovered may lead to expulsion from the hostel and the institution.
 

CANTEEN

There is a canteen in the ground floor of the IBMS Block.
 

DENTAL PROGRAM INFRASTRUCTURE

  1. Lecture Halls: KISTMC has 80 student capacities, two lecture halls dedicated for BDS Program. Every year KISTMC will add new lecture hall dedicated to dental program as per need.
  2. Dental Clinics and Dental Labs: KISTMC has a state of art Dental Clinic functioning, with 25 well equipped (electronic dental chairs with all accessories, direct digital OPG, Cephalogram and Intra oral periapical radiography).

COLLEGE LIBRARY

The college library has all the required text books and reference books required for the MBBS and BDS courses. Online resources, CD-ROMs and DVDs are also available in the college library. Over 3000 textbooks, reference books and other categories of books are available. The college subscribes to a number of national and international journals and online access to over 3500 journals is available through online databases.
 

COLLEGE TIMINGS

The official timing is from 8 am to 4 pm from Sunday to Friday. Saturday is the weekly day off.
 

COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING

The college actively encourages and supports community-based learning (CBL). CBL is being actively promoted through community visits, postings to peripheral health institutions, long stays in rural communities and family visits. The institution actively promotes the development of a community orientation among the graduating doctors. The college plans to start satellite or outreach clinics to improve healthcare delivery in the periphery and for training of medical, nursing and other categories of students. A satellite hospital is functioning in Dolakha district. The college has worked out a medical insurance scheme, Sanjeevani for the residents of Imadol VDC and neighboring VDCs. The residents can avail of basic medical facilities in the hospital on payment of a nominal premium each year. First year students spend one month in residential community diagnosis field.
 

STUDENT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Our students had participated in the intermedical college quiz competition both in 2009 and 2010. They won the first prize at the quiz competition organized at the Institute of Medicine recently. In July 2012 students organized a Teacher’s day program and in August a KIST Medical Students’ day was organized. A welcome program for the new batch of students was held in January 2012. Two blood donation programs were also organized. A college sports week was organized towards end of April and beginning of May 2012. Our students did us proud by winning the first prize in girl’s basketball at the Karuna 2012 charitable fest organized from 8th to 14th September 2012 at Universal College of Medical Sciences, Bhairahawa.
 

PROMOTING ACADEMICS AT KIST MEDICAL COLLEGE

The college strongly believes in creating a good academic environment. Four teacher’s training programs have been conducted till date for faculty members. Faculty members from renowned universities like Harvard University, University of British Columbia and Universiti Sains Malaysia have visited the institution and shared their experience with our faculty members and students. The college conducts a Medical Humanities module, ‘Sparshanam’ which has been highly appreciated in Nepal and abroad. Faculty members have participated as resource persons in various conferences and workshops both within and outside the country.

An academic session is organized every Tuesday and faculty members have presented papers at the Research day of the Institute of Medicine in 2009 and 2010. Faculty has also presented papers in various national and international conferences. The college has a Memorandum of Understanding with Universiti Sains Malaysia and University of Aberdeen. Faculties of the college are both fellows and faculty at the PSGFAIMER Regional Institute in Coimbatore, India. Faculty members have presented papers at the South East Asian Region Association for Medical Education (SEARAME) conference in Coimbatore, India.
