Teaching-Learning activities at KIST Medical College

KIST Medical College in consonance with trends the world over treats students as adult learners capable of taking increasing responsibility for their own learning. A mixture of lectures, practicals and self-directed learning sessions (under the guidance of facilitators) are used for student learning.

As recommended by TU, IOM an integrated, organ system approach is followed. All new students have to attend a week long orientation program where they learn about medical ethics, the institution, the duties and responsibilities of a medical student, the art of medicine, the doctor and the community and how to develop problem based learning skills. The students become familiar with faculty members and various departments.

The lecture halls are equipped with all modern teaching-learning aids. Whiteboard, projection screen, LCD and overhead projectors, public address system and cordless microphones are provided. The practical halls are equipped with all necessary equipments and instruments. The pharmacology and community medicine practical labs are arranged for promoting problem-based learning in groups. Tables and chairs for group work, flip boards and flip charts, white board, LCD projector and computer aided learning programs are available.

There are regular assessments at the end of each organ system and students are counseled to improve their performance. Different departments conduct formative assessments regularly. Correlation seminars help students develop an integrated view of the subject and teach them to work in a team. Problem based learning sessions in Pharmacology teaches students about rational therapeutics and equips them with the skills to stay up to date with newer medicines and therapies. Students maintain practical records and log books of their learning activities. They stay in rural communities during their community diagnosis posting and learn to be a ‘community doctor’.

Early clinical contact is emphasized and students spend around four hours every week in the teaching hospital learning history taking skills in the first year and physical examinations kills in the second. They also participate in a Medical Humanities module which teaches them the ‘art’ of medicine and to be more humane doctors. The college has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Medicine allowing students to obtain autopsy training at IOM.
