The dental department of KIST Medical College, is one of the best department in the nation with sufficient number of specialist working as full time faculties. The department is involved in rich amalgamation of scientific enquiry and comprehensive dental care service. As the department has three major responsibilities, it offers quality dental care services with utmost comfort to the patients, , rich amalgamation of scientific enquiry and improvement of the dental care service and educate the students for efficient management of patient and design a good treatment plan utilizing the state-of-the-art material and techniques. The department is also concerned with the promotion of public health.
KISTMC plans to start its own Postgraduate program (MDS) in the near future so the national needs for dental human resources are met in the field of dentistry.
KIST has all the basic infrastructure, such as lecture halls with audio visual aid, preclinical dental lab and functioning clinical departments with electronic dental chairs, as per the requirement of Nepal Medical Council.
The dental curriculum reflects the four essential components of competency that is needed for a BDS graduate.
The duration of the BDS course is four and half years, comprising of first, second and final phase.
First phase is of two year’s duration during which period anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology; pathology and pharmacology are taught as integrated basic medical science subjects. Dental subjects include Dental Materials Science, Oral Biology, Community dentistry, Pre-clinical Prosthodontics & Preclinical Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Pre-clinical Orthodontics & Pedodontics.
Second phase is of one year during which include major clinical teaching and postings. All dental subjects are taught along with General Medicine, General Surgery including Anesthesiology.
Final phase comprises of one and half year duration and during this period clinical posting in Prosthodontics , Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Orthodontics, Oral and maxillofacial Surgery, Pedodontics, Periodontics, Community Dentistry are conducted. University Final Exams are conducted twice during this phase.
The total duration of compulsory rotational internship is one year. The internship begins after completing and qualifying the final BDS examination.
The program is , monitored and implemented by a core group of executives comprising of the Principal, Academic Director and BDS program coordinator, IBMS coordinator and clinical coordinator. . Regular strategic planning meeting are held with concerned HOD and faculties for the smooth running of the teaching learning activities.
